The Birth of the Bikini

Sure, the 4th of July is a big date in history. I know I enjoyed delicious burgers and the colorful fireworks display last night with my friends as we celebrated our nation’s independence.
But the 5th of July is mighty important too.
What’s that, you say?
On July 5th, 1946 the very first bikini debuted at a Paris fashion show. Automobile engineer turned fashion designer Louis Réard created the bikini after seeing women rolling up their clothes to get a better tan. He named the swimsuit after the Bikini Atoll.

At first he could not find a model willing (or brave enough) to wear it. So he hired a nude dancer named Micheline Bernardini to showcase his design. It was a smash hit at the poolside fashion show and summer hasn’t been the same since.

All hail Louis Réard’s bikini and the women who wear them!
